Javed Akhtar Reflects on Alcohol Struggles and Its Impact on Life Decisions
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar recently opened up about his decade-long battle with alcoholism, which significantly impacted his personal and professional life. Akhtar disclosed that he quit drinking on July 31, 1991, after realizing the adverse effects alcohol had on his decision-making and personal relationships. Speaking candidly on the YouTube channel Chill Sesh, he estimated that he lost approximately ten years due to his struggle with alcohol.
Akhtar, now 79, reflected on how alcohol consumption influenced many of his life decisions, including the breakdown of his first marriage to actor and screenwriter Honey Irani. The couple, who married in 1972, divorced in 1985, with Akhtar attributing his alcohol addiction as a major factor in the dissolution of their relationship. “I regret the failure of my first marriage. It could have been saved,” he confessed, highlighting his “irresponsible attitude” and tendency to make impulsive decisions while under the influence.
In a conversation with Sapan Verma, Akhtar expressed regret over the lost time and urged young people to avoid alcohol for a more constructive life. He stated, “I have wasted a grand total of at least 10 years just drinking. I could have used that time for a much more positive and constructive purpose.” He further emphasized that many of his “major life mistakes” were made under the influence of alcohol.
