Jayson Tatum Boston Celtics Basketball Game

PHILADELPHIA — Jayson Tatum, the star forward for the Boston Celtics, has openly declared his ambition to become one of the all-time greats in basketball, specifically setting his sights on surpassing Larry Bird as the franchise’s best player. Following a strong performance in a 124-104 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, Tatum reflected on his aspirations and the legacy he hopes to build.

During a recent locker room conversation in Miami, Tatum sparked a debate among teammates about the greatest player in Celtics history. Tatum expressed admiration for Bird, citing Bird’s three MVP awards and championship triumphs, but also emphasized how he intends to chase that legendary status.

“I’m very accomplished at a young age, but the truth is I envision myself as one of those guys: the LeBrons, the Stephs, the KDs,” Tatum stated. “Wearing a Celtics uniform comes with a lot of pride, and the best Celtic ever is Larry Bird. Even if I never reach that — maybe I do, maybe I don’t — if you aspire to chase that guy, it comes with a level of focus and motivation every single day to be the best you can.”

At just 26 years old, Tatum has already established an impressive resume that includes six All-Star game appearances and an NBA championship. He leads the Celtics this season, averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game.

Despite acknowledging that he has benefitted from a strong supporting cast, Tatum’s desire to elevate his game is clear. After recording his second triple-double of the season, he addressed his motivations further: “You start to see the impact that Bird had on the game of basketball . . . It’s like, all right, you can be in those rooms with the Celtics legends, but it doesn’t just stop at one; you’ve obviously got to win multiple, and that’s what we’re trying to do. I always wanted to be the best.”

Tatum recognizes the burden of expectation that comes with targeting Bird’s achievements, given that Bird is revered not only in Boston but across the league. Tatum’s commitment to continuous improvement is essential for meeting those lofty goals.

“Just with the mindset, you can’t skip any steps,” Tatum explained. “How can I impact the game? How can I impact my teammates positively? We all appreciate the game the same way and are out there for the common goal?”

Coach Joe Mazzulla praised Tatum’s growth as a player, noting that Tatum’s awareness of the game has evolved significantly. “He’s been doing this a long time, but people just take advantage of him and take it for granted,” Mazzulla said. “He has an understanding of being patient with the game.”

Tatum continues to build his legacy while striving for unparalleled accomplishments within the Celtics organization. After meeting Bird briefly at last year’s All-Star Game, Tatum described the encounter as an honor and a motivation to continue on his path.

“He was just like, ‘Likewise. I love watching you play,’” Tatum recalled. “That was just a cool moment. To have one of the greatest players of all time acknowledge you, even if it’s for a brief moment, is something I’ll always cherish.”
