Jean Smart and John Krasinski Shine in New York Theater

NEW YORK — This summer, two beloved television stars, Jean Smart and John Krasinski, have returned to the New York stage, each headlining a one-person drama.
Krasinski plays Roger in Penelope Skinner’s darkly comedic play, “Angry Alan,” which opened at the newly rebranded Studio Seaview. The character grapples with feelings of disconnection after a divorce and job layoff, turning to a radical YouTube figure for guidance. The performance, directed by Sam Gold, explores themes of identity and the personal costs of digital radicalization.
Smart makes her Broadway return in Jamie Wax’s “Call Me Izzy” at Studio 54. The play follows a Southern woman who discovers her talent for poetry while trapped in an abusive marriage. Smart’s character, Izzy, struggles with her oppressive circumstances, finding solace and a sense of empowerment in her writing.
Both performances explore similar themes of personal struggle amid shifting social dynamics. Smart delivers a committed performance, drawing on her extensive experience, while Krasinski’s portrayal of Roger is both charming and unsettling, reflecting the duality of his character’s journey.
The theater welcomes audiences to engage with these poignant stories that resonate with contemporary issues. “Angry Alan” runs through Aug. 3, and “Call Me Izzy” will be available until Aug. 17.
