Jeff Daniels Joins Cast of Apple TV+’s ‘Shrinking’ for Season 3

CULVER CITY, Calif. — Emmy Award-winning actor Jeff Daniels is set to join the cast of Apple TV+’s comedy series “Shrinking” in its upcoming third season. Daniels, who is known for his dramatic roles in series like “The Newsroom,” will portray the father of lead character Jimmy, played by Jason Segel.

In this season, which will return later this year, Jimmy continues to employ his unorthodox therapeutic methods to help clients while navigating his personal grief. “Shrinking” is co-created by Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein and depicts the complex journey of a therapist who candidly expresses his thoughts and feelings to clients.

Daniels’ character will make a guest appearance as Jimmy’s father, marking a significant return to comedy for the actor. Over the past decade, Daniels has predominantly taken on serious roles, including his recent performances in Showtime’s “American Rust” and Netflix’s “A Man In Full.” Previously, he’s best known for comedic films like “Dumb and Dumber,” but this is his first major live-action comedy series role.

As the narrative unfolds, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics between Jimmy and his father, which have been largely unexplored in earlier seasons. According to co-creator Bill Lawrence, the introduction of Jimmy’s father will shed light on unresolved issues stemming from Jimmy’s childhood, especially following the death of his wife, Tia. “This arc will deepen the character’s backstory and impact not just Jimmy but also his daughter, Alice,” Lawrence explained.

The core ensemble of “Shrinking” also features Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Christa Miller, among others. Goldstein, an executive producer and co-creator, is expected to contribute further narrative depth as part of the returning cast.

Executive producers for Season 3 include Ashley Nicole Black and Bill Posley, alongside Lawrence and Goldstein. The collaboration of Warner Bros. Television, along with Lawrence’s production company, Doozer Productions, ensures a strong foundational team for this season.

Daniels’ upcoming projects include a portrayal of former President Ronald Reagan in the Cold War film “Reykjavik” and another Apple TV project titled “Dilettante” from Berlanti Productions. His addition to “Shrinking” has sparked excitement among fans, particularly for how this new character dynamic might play out.
