Jeremy Peña Faces Extended Absence Due to Left Oblique Strain

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña announced on Thursday that imaging has confirmed he has a left oblique strain. Peña had been out of the lineup for the past four games, initially set to play on Sunday before being scratched due to injury.
The Astros have struggled recently, suffering a sweep at home against the Seattle Mariners and losing the first two games of their current series against the Oakland Athletics. General Manager Dana Brown had hoped Peña’s injury might be short-term, but it now appears he may face a longer recovery.
“It’s frustrating, but I feel like I’m heading in the right direction,” Peña said, expressing his disappointment while remaining hopeful for a quick return.
Oblique injuries often take weeks to heal, rather than days, leading many to speculate about Peña’s absence as the postseason approaches. He previously missed 27 games this season due to a broken left rib.
The Astros’ offense has been further impacted by injuries to key players, as they fight to secure a spot in the postseason. Houston entered Thursday’s game just one game behind the Detroit Tigers for the final American League Wild Card position.
Peña had an impressive 2025 season, batting .304 with 17 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 125 games. His performance has been crucial for the team, and his absence could jeopardize their chances of making the playoffs.
Following Peña’s injury, Mauricio Dubon has stepped in at shortstop, but the team understands that replacing he cannot match Peña’s offensive capabilities. Dubon has played solid defense, ranking eighth among shortstops in Outs Above Average, but offensive production remains a concern.
As the Astros aim for a postseason run, the hope is that Peña will recover quickly enough to contribute, should they qualify for the playoffs.
