Jill Pearson Mixed Media Art

Jill Pearson has recently been awarded first place in the mixed media category at the Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show, affirming her status as a prominent emerging artist.

During the pandemic, like many others, Pearson found herself seeking new creative outlets beyond her screen. A trained professional illustrator and holder of a fine arts degree from the University of the Arts, she returned to her roots in painting in 2021. Although she did not initially aim for awards or accolades, her dedication led to a noteworthy victory in 2024.

Pearson’s approach to mixed-media art incorporates acrylic paints, drawing materials, and collages crafted from various found papers, including books and palette papers. This distinctive style straddles the line between abstract and landscape art, evoking a sense of familiarity and intrigue in viewers.

Her artistic process begins with intuition, layering and removing elements to cultivate texture and depth. Pearson often uses an orbital sander to create unique textures, illustrating her method of experimentation on the canvas rather than relying solely on preliminary sketches.

In the realm of creativity, Pearson identifies more closely with the gardener than the architect. While architects meticulously plan their creations, gardeners allow their works to develop more organically. Pearson sees the challenge in abstract art as equally exciting and complex, as it does not begin with a fixed notion or sketch, but unfolds as she develops it.

Success at the Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show was particularly meaningful to Pearson, marking her growth as an artist. She submitted her application and prepared for the event months in advance, showcasing her latest creations in a tent at Lititz Spring Park.

Upon receiving the award, Pearson was pleasantly surprised, as it had felt like a quiet day had settled over her booth. This recognition is more than just an accolade; it represents validation for her artistic endeavors, granting her newfound legitimacy in the art community.

With the recognition from the Lititz Show, Pearson hopes to expand her reach by seeking opportunities in more prestigious galleries and renowned art fairs, such as the Long’s Park Art Festival in Lancaster. She views this award as a stepping stone for her artistic journey, eager to explore further avenues and showcase her talent.
