Jim Abbott’s Inspiring Journey Celebrated in New ESPN Documentary

New York, NY – ESPN will debut a special documentary titled Southpaw – The Life and Legacy of Jim Abbott on Sunday, July 13, at 9 p.m. ET. The 90-minute program explores the remarkable life of Jim Abbott, who was born without a right hand but went on to pitch a no-hitter for the New York Yankees.

The documentary is part of the E60 series and is designed to inspire those with disabilities, as Abbott’s story continues to resonate three decades later. Abbott, who was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1967, first gained recognition as a standout pitcher at the University of Michigan before achieving Olympic glory in 1988.

Abbott recalls the historic no-hitter he pitched on September 4, 1993, when the Yankees faced Cleveland at Yankee Stadium. The film includes a unique experience as Abbott returned to the stadium to reminisce about that night, watching the game alongside ESPN correspondent Jeremy Schaap.

Throughout his career, Abbott rose to prominence but faced significant pressure as a disabled athlete viewed as a role model. He expressed the challenges of being an “inspiration” while dealing with the pressure of expectations from others.

Featuring over 40 interviews, Southpaw includes conversations with family members and baseball legends, including Hall of Famers Cal Ripken, Jr., George Brett, and Wade Boggs. Abbott’s mother, Kathy, and his brother, Chad, also share insights about his journey.

Several other athletes, such as Shaquem Griffin, the first NFL player with one hand, and Nick Newell, the first MMA champion with one hand, lend their voices to the narrative, adding depth to Abbott’s legacy.

Directed by Mike Farrell, Southpaw examines themes of ingenuity and identity in the face of adversity. ESPN’s E60 brand, known for its compelling storytelling, has previously received numerous accolades for its investigative reporting and unique features.
