John C. Reilly Mister Romantic

Los Angeles, CA – Actor and musician John C. Reilly recently opened up about his fluctuating roles in film, Box Office challenges, and his new persona, Mister Romantic. Reilly, known for both serious and comedic performances, discussed how honesty plays a key role in his acting approach.

“I don’t try to be funny or serious – just honest,” he said. “Life contains grey areas and contradictions, like how someone might crack a joke at a funeral for relief.” Reilly believes that the depth of a character must resonate with viewers, making them feel empathy.

The actor described his new vaudeville crooner alter ego, Mister Romantic, as a way to connect with audiences amid a divisive world. “I created Mister Romantic to explore love and empathy as he has no memory of the past,” he explained. “It’s all about being present and in the moment with the audience.”

Inspired by musical legends like Harry Nilsson and Nat King Cole, Reilly acknowledged the challenge of reinterpreting classic songs. “I want to keep renewing these things if they have meaning for us,” he noted.

When asked if Mister Romantic would cover Tom Waits‘ songs, Reilly humorously considered it but pointed out that he personally feels a deeper connection to Waits’ work. “He’s a big influence on me,” Reilly said, reminiscing about the time he helped Waits find an acting coach. “He changed my life.”

Reilly also reflected on playing the late comedian Oliver Hardy, stating, “I’ve been preparing my whole life since watching his films as a child.” He shared a sense of loss regarding Hardy’s limited recordings, emphasizing his desire to express himself musically.

Discussing film successes and failures, Reilly described every project as a “prayer” and acknowledged the unpredictability of the box office. “Even the best art can fail to find its moment,” he said. “But if you’re proud of your work, that in itself is a success.”

Finally, he spoke fondly of his role as Dr. Steve Brule, noting the fun of being involved in the eccentric character. “I’m proud to be part of that show, and I’m delighted that people love it,” he added.

Despite the frustrations of the current film industry, Reilly remains optimistic. He believes that true artistry will continue to flourish as long as creators persist in telling their stories.
