Johnny Mathis Concert Retirement Announcement

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — Legendary singer Johnny Mathis, 89, announced his retirement from live performances on Wednesday, March 26, citing age and memory issues that have accelerated in recent years. His final concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Mathis expressed his gratitude for his fans’ support throughout his nearly 70-year career. He stated, “There are still some exciting concerts coming up, regrettably all Johnny Mathis concerts from June 2025 onwards are now cancelled.”

Mathis will perform three more shows as part of his “Voice Of Romance Tour” before retiring. Upcoming dates include April 10 in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania; April 26 in Shipshewana, Indiana; and May 10 in Santa Rosa, California.

The announcement comes as Mathis prepares for his 90th birthday this year. According to the statement, “It’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts.”

Throughout his dynamic career, which began in 1955 with the release of his first album, Johnny Mathis: A New Sound In Popular Song, Mathis has become one of the most enduring performers in the music industry. He has enjoyed considerable success, landing 34 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, with three reaching the top 10.

Mathis is renowned for classics such as “Chances Are,” “Misty,” and “It’s Not For Me to Say,” all of which have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and was nominated for five Grammys during his illustrious career.

Following a show at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota, a reviewer praised Mathis’s recent performance, calling it “the most beautifully romantic concert in a theater in recent memory.” Concert-goers noted his vocal prowess despite his advanced age, and he was able to connect deeply with the audience.

Mathis’s retirement raises reflections on his long-standing relationship with Columbia Records, where he holds the title of the longest-signed recording artist. His most recent album, Johnny Mathis Sings the Great New American Songbook, was released in 2017.

As he prepares for his final performances, Mathis remains appreciative of his fans. In his farewell statement, he concluded, “Johnny Mathis and his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis fans worldwide for your continued love and support of his music! It’s truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful.’”
