Jonathan Groff Broadway Just In Time

NEW YORK, June 2, 2025 — Jonathan Groff, the Tony-winning actor, is back on Broadway in the production of Just In Time at Circle in the Square Theatre. Groff’s journey in the arts reflects both his personal values and his dedication to his craft.

Admired for his earnest performances, Groff believes in the vital bond between an artist and their audience. “I went to an open call,” he recalls of his early days, a smile lighting his face. “I remember calling my dad the night before the final callback, saying, ‘I can’t quite play this role yet, but I know if they give me the chance, I could get there.’” His determination paid off when he landed a role in Spring Awakening, which marked the start of his rise in musical theatre.

Despite steady progress, Groff faced challenges along the way. After Spring Awakening, he chose to refine his acting skills instead of joining the cast of Glee. It was a tough time for him, as he navigated through Off-Broadway productions. One significant moment was when he starred in The Bacchae at Shakespeare in the Park. “Oh god, I got ripped to shreds in the reviews,” he admits, recalling the harsh criticism he received. However, that experience became a turning point. “I just decided to be confident and to own whatever it was I was doing on stage,” he said.

Groff later secured a role in the hit musical Hamilton, which he describes as a stroke of luck. “I really did feel like I won the lottery,” he laughs, recalling how he stepped into the role after Brian D’Arcy James departed. “I thought it would be fun to hang out with Lin-Manuel Miranda, and then I ended up playing King George.” His time in Hamilton deepened his love for theatre and solidified his status as a leading man.

This past season, Groff won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Franklin Shepard in the revival of Company. “It was a life-changing experience,” he said of the production, which he views as a deeply personal work from its creators Hal Prince, George Firth, and Stephen Sondheim.

As Groff takes on the role of Bobby Darin in Just In Time, he continues to share more of himself with the audience. “The audience is the only relationship he was any good at,” he reflects on his character. “And honestly, same.” Groff noted that the emotional connection with the crowd is what fuels him in his performances, making every show a profoundly spiritual experience.
