Barcelona, Spain — Jordi Alba, a veteran defender nearing retirement, has spoken out against comparisons between rising star Lamine Yamal and legendary player Lionel Messi. During an interview on the program El Larguero, Alba emphasized that while Yamal, who is only 17 years old, shows immense talent, he is not yet on Messi’s level. ‘He’s an extraordinary player,’ Alba said, ‘but Leo has no rival.’

The full-back, who has played alongside Messi, explained that the enduring greatness of Messi is a standard that cannot be matched. ‘Only time will tell if Yamal can sustain that winning mentality for so many years,’ he noted, reflecting on Messi’s unique career. Even though Yamal is part of a talented Barcelona squad featuring stars like Pedri and Gavi, Alba insists that comparisons to Messi are premature.

Further fueling discussion, there have been rumors about potentially renaming Camp Nou in honor of Messi, who is recognized as a historic figure in soccer. Alba commented on this idea, saying he believes Messi would not support such a change. ‘Camp Nou is fine as it is,’ he stated, suggesting that any recognition of Messi should be in line with what the fans want.

As Alba prepares to retire at the end of the season, he reflected on his experiences with Messi, calling his departure from Barcelona in 2021 a ‘devastating blow.’ ‘It wasn’t the farewell he deserved. Hopefully, he gets the tribute he’s owed,’ Alba added, recognizing Messi’s contributions to the club.

In light of Yamal’s impressive start to his career, where he has already earned the second spot in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings, there is much anticipation about his potential. Messi himself has expressed admiration for Yamal, noting his growth and talent, which only adds to the excitement as both players prepare to meet on the field soon.
