Josh Elander Tennessee Baseball Coach

KNOXVILLE, TennesseeJosh Elander has been named the new head coach of the Tennessee baseball team, a decision made public on October 25, 2023, ending a swift coaching search. Elander, who has been a popular figure within the program, was the clear choice to lead the Volunteers.

“From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice,” said athletics director Danny White in a statement. “His relentless commitment has helped transform Tennessee baseball into a powerhouse, and we are proud to have him as our next head coach on Rocky Top.”

The coaching search began on October 22 following the departure of former head coach Tony Vitello to manage a Major League Baseball team. Elander, who served as the hitting coach for the Volunteers since 2018, interviewed for the role on October 24 and was selected the next day.

Elander’s impact on the program has been significant. Under his guidance, Tennessee has achieved at least 100 home runs for four consecutive seasons, including a record 184 homers in the season they won the College World Series — the second-most in NCAA history.

In an official release, Elander expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top,” he said. “I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here.”

A native of Round Rock, Texas, Elander played at TCU from 2010-2012 before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves. He spent four years in the minor leagues before returning to TCU as a student assistant in 2016.

The Volunteers’ search for continuity amid a challenging timeframe has led some to speculate about potential external candidates as well, but many view Elander as the most logical successor to maintain the program’s momentum.

Rumors of other potential head coaches have surfaced, including Coastal Carolina‘s Kevin Schnall and Kansas‘s Dan Fitzgerald. Yet reports indicate that Elander remains the favorite among supporters and players alike.

As the Tennessee baseball program looks to sustain its winning heritage, Elander’s appointment may prove critical in navigating the changing landscape of collegiate athletics during this transitional period.
