Kansas City Current Hosts Chicago Stars on Women’s Cancer Awareness Night

KANSAS CITY, MO (Sept. 25, 2025) – The Kansas City Current, fresh off winning the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Shield for the first time in franchise history, will host Chicago Stars FC at CPKC Stadium on Friday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. CT. The match marks Women’s Cancer Awareness Night, presented by The University of Kansas Cancer Center.
The Current clinched the NWSL Shield on Sept. 20, securing their spot at the top of the league standings. A 2-0 victory over Seattle Reign FC made history for Kansas City, which became the fastest team to win the Shield with five regular season games remaining. Reports indicate that the Current has dominated home matches with a remarkable 17-1-5 record at CPKC Stadium.
Hosted matches will be broadcast nationally on Prime Video, featuring commentary from Lori Lindsey, Mike Watts, and Kealia Watt. Fans can also listen on 90.9 The Bridge in English, Spanish, or Portuguese through the KC Current App.
Against Chicago, the Current faces a team it has gone unbeaten against in the last four meetings, outscoring them 14-7 during that span. However, Chicago leads the all-time series 5-3-2. The matchup has historically been high-scoring, with the two teams averaging 4.3 goals in their previous encounters.
Current forward Temwa Chawinga, who regained the Golden Boot lead with her 13 goals this season, will be a key player to watch. She recently celebrated a birthday on Sept. 20, scoring in the game that secured the Shield for her team.
In support of the evening’s cause, the University of Kansas Cancer Center will perform the ceremonial first kick. The center specializes in treating breast and gynecologic cancers and aims to improve cancer care delivery.
After clinching the Shield, the Current is also focused on maintaining momentum as they prepare for the NWSL playoffs. With their undefeated home record intact and a strong performance in prior matches, Kansas City aims to extend its success into the postseason.
Fans can purchase tickets for the match, which promises excitement both on and off the pitch as the Current strives for continued success in a historic season.
