Karate Kid: Legends Set for May Release After Cobra Kai Finale

LOS ANGELES, CA — Sony Pictures is set to release “Karate Kid: Legends” in May 2024, following the conclusion of the popular series “Cobra Kai” on Netflix. The film was initially scheduled for June 2024 but was rescheduled due to Hollywood labor union strikes that year.
The movie will now premiere after “Cobra Kai” wrapped up its final season earlier this year, taking advantage of the series’ continued popularity. Fans can expect to see familiar faces from the series, along with Ralph Macchio, who played the original Karate Kid, and Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 reboot.
Prior to its current release date, the film was also slated for December 2024. However, that date was taken by “Kraven the Hunter,” which faced stiff competition during the busy holiday season and grossed over $25 million domestically.
Industry analysts predict that “Karate Kid: Legends” may open with higher ticket sales, especially with limited competition during its debut weekend. The main box office rivals will be films released on Memorial Day weekend, along with holdovers.
Interestingly, other family-targeted films released in the same timeframe have generally been hybrids or heavily reliant on CGI, such as 2024’s “The Garfield Movie” and 2021’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.” In addition, recent updates of ’80s classics like “Ghostbusters” and “Beetlejuice” have also drawn significant box office numbers.
As the release date approaches, fans of the franchise are eager to see how this new installment will resonate with audiences.
