WUHAN, China — Karolina Muchova came back from a set down to defeat Marta Kostyuk 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Wuhan Open on Sunday. The match lasted just over two and a half hours.

Kostyuk, who faced Jessica Pegula in the Round of 16 in Beijing recently, stole the first set with two breaks of serve in the fourth and eighth games, taking it 6-2. After holding serve in the first game of the second set, she struggled as Muchova fought back.

Muchova broke Kostyuk in the third and fifth games, racing to a 5-1 lead before winning the second set 6-2, leveling the match.

In a tightly contested third set, Muchova broke serve twice to lead 5-2. Kostyuk fought back, breaking Muchova once and narrowing the score to 4-5, but Muchova ultimately served out the match, clinching the victory on her fourth match point.

This win marks Muchova’s progression to the next round, where she will face either Veronika Kudemertova or Magdalena Frech. For Kostyuk, this defeat concludes her 2025 season, earning her a disappointing result in her final tournament of the year.
