Kathleen Kennedy Reveals Timeline for Upcoming Star Wars Film

BURBANK, Calif. – Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, disclosed key details about the timeline of Shawn Levy’s forthcoming Star Wars film in a recent interview. The film, which may star Ryan Gosling, is set to explore the galaxy five or six years after the events of the nine main films, collectively known as the Skywalker Saga.
In her extensive discussion, Kennedy emphasized that Levy’s project will be a standalone story set in the future, stating, “Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” She also indicated that while the film will introduce primarily new characters, there may be appearances from characters featured in the sequel trilogy.
Kennedy elaborated, “And with this, it’s all pretty much new characters. We may bring some of the characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.” This shift toward new narratives might offer creative freedom within the storied franchise.
Production on Levy’s movie is expected to commence after the release of The Mandalorian’s cinematic finale, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is scheduled for May 22, 2026. Kennedy confirmed, “I’m producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I’m also producing Shawn Levy’s movie, which is after that.”
Ryan Gosling was reported to be in talks for the film in January, but details regarding his character or role remain unconfirmed. Should he join the cast, it will mark another entry for the actor in the science fiction genre, having previously starred in Blade Runner 2049.
Levy, known for his work on the Deadpool franchise, has been developing this Star Wars project since 2022. His regular collaborator, Jonathan Tropper, signed on to work as the screenwriter in July 2024. The film is set to be the first major theatrical release to take place in the post-Rise of Skywalker era, leading into a new phase for the beloved franchise.
In the same interview, Kennedy addressed ongoing speculation about her future at Lucasfilm, confirming she will remain with the studio. “We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously with these projects,” she noted while discussing a broader plan for eventual succession.
Star Wars fans are awaiting what stories will unfold as Levy and Gosling’s film paves the way for upcoming narratives, including a potential Rey-centric movie aimed at exploring the establishment of a new Jedi Order. “This is the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future,” Kennedy clarified.
The possibilities seem endless as the Star Wars universe prepares to embark on this innovative path, blending both familiar elements and fresh perspectives to capture the imaginations of new and longtime fans alike.
