Keanu Reeves Might Make A Comeback In Speed 3 For Its 30th Anniversary

Various theories have emerged since the release of John Wick 4, speculating on the fate of Keanu Reeves‘ character and the potential for his return in the fifth installment. However, it is 2024 that could mark an even more significant comeback for the actor. Reeves has rejuvenated his career by starring in action franchises, starting with John Wick in 2014. While some theories suggest a potential return, other possibilities exist for Reeves when it comes to action films.

Reeves’ filmography encompasses a wide array of genres, from romantic comedies to dramas and sci-fi. However, there is something about him and action movies. One of his earliest notable roles was alongside Patrick Swayze in the 90s classic Point Break. He then gained global fame portraying Neo in the renowned franchise, The Matrix. Finally, Reeves embarked on another successful action franchise in his more mature years, starring as John Wick. But, 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of another classic Keanu Reeves action film that could make a comeback and reunite him with his female lead: Speed.

Speed was released in 1994, featuring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. The movie follows the story of a SWAT agent trying to save people on a bus rigged with a bomb that will explode if the vehicle goes below 50 miles per hour. The film was both a critical and box-office success, grossing $350 million on a $30 million budget. The on-screen chemistry between Reeves and Bullock was a highlight of the film and led to an off-screen romance and another movie collaboration. However, Reeves declined to participate in the sequel due to dissatisfaction with the script.

While Speed 3 has not been confirmed, both Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, as well as Jon de Bont, the original director of Speed 1 and 2, have expressed their willingness to return to the franchise on certain conditions. Given that the second installment was a disappointment, a successful comeback would likely require the involvement of the original lead duo and, most importantly, a gripping script. The 30th anniversary of the original film presents the perfect opportunity to develop a compelling screenplay and seal the deal for a grand return in Speed 3, potentially rectifying past missteps.

Considering that John Wick 4 seemingly marked the end for Keanu Reeves’ character in the franchise, it may be best to let it rest rather than forcefully bring him back from the dead, even if certain theories propose such a possibility. Moreover, Reeves’ participation in Ballerina appears to be a more fitting way to keep him involved in the franchise. In other words, reviving not only a classic 90s action franchise like Speed but also reuniting the fantastic on-screen couple of Bullock and Reeves would make for an exciting 30th anniversary celebration.
