Keith Hernandez Urges Mets to Re-Sign Top Free Agents Alonso and Diaz
New York, NY – Former Mets player and current analyst Keith Hernandez expressed his strong belief that the New York Mets should re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Diaz as both players are expected to opt-out of their contracts this offseason.
Appearing on a recent episode of “The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, Hernandez praised Alonso’s offensive capabilities, stating, “You’re not gonna replace his bat, his power bat. To me, he is the second coming of Harmon Killebrew.” He emphasized the importance of Alonso’s right-handed bat in a lineup that has been top-heavy with left-hand hitters.
Hernandez did acknowledge some defensive flaws but highlighted Alonso’s proficiency in making scoops that benefit other infielders. He stated, “If he drives in 125 runs, a right-handed bat, I think they’ve got to sign him, and they’ve got to sign Diaz, too.” Diaz, who had a stellar season with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves, is also a key player that Hernandez believes the Mets should retain.
In 2024, Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out after 2025, having hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs. Meanwhile, Diaz finished 2024 with a remarkable 0.87 WHIP and 98 strikeouts in over 66 innings during his third year of a five-year, $102 million contract.
As Hernandez wrapped up his 20th season as an analyst for SNY, he expressed his intention to continue, stating, “I am not ready to retire. If I do another three years, they’ve always been three-year deals.” This commitment has generated excitement among fans who appreciate his contributions to Mets broadcasts.
Reflecting on the upcoming offseason, Hernandez noted, “We’ll see, and it’s going to be curious to see what transforms in the offseason.” He hinted at potential trades and emphasized the need for a strong starting pitcher, saying, “I always say pitching is the name of the game.”
