CANNES, France — Kevin Spacey is scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award on May 20 at the Better World Fund’s 10th anniversary gala dinner at the Carlton Hotel. This award highlights Spacey’s contributions to film and television, recognizing his ‘artistic brilliance’ and ‘enduring impact on cinema and the arts,’ according to organizers.

The Oscar-winning actor will also be at the Cannes Film Festival to promote his new film, The Awakening, which is being presented at the Marché du Film. Spacey’s award acceptance marks a significant moment in the #MeToo era, as he attempts to regain his footing in Hollywood after facing numerous allegations of sexual misconduct.

Manuel Collas De La Roche, president of the Better World Fund, expressed enthusiasm for Spacey’s presence, noting, “We are truly privileged to welcome Kevin Spacey as our Guest of Honor and Honoree at the Better World Fund Gala.” He emphasized Spacey’s transformative influence on cinema.

Spacey’s appearance follows a turbulent career marked by allegations from over 30 men, leading to high-profile legal battles. In July 2023, he was found not guilty of sexual assault in a prominent UK trial, and he had earlier faced similar accusations in the U.S. However, many still view him as a controversial figure.

Stephanie Johns, a Canadian screenwriter, questioned why Spacey was chosen for the honor, voicing her disappointment: “There are so many high-profile white men who could get an award like that, so why invite him?”
