Kevin Willard Coaching Villanova Basketball

NEW YORK, NY — Kevin Willard‘s journey as Villanova‘s new men’s basketball coach begins Monday when the Wildcats face eighth-ranked Brigham Young University in Las Vegas. After a highly publicized departure from the University of Maryland, Willard aims to revitalize Villanova, a program that has experienced recent struggles.

During Big East media day last week, Willard addressed the lingering sentiment from Maryland fans who plan to attend Villanova’s game against Georgetown. When asked about their intentions, he responded playfully, stating, “I think it’s great. I’m trying to help [Georgetown coach Ed Cooley’s] budget.” This response highlighted his approachable demeanor as he settles into his role at Villanova.

Willard took over from Kyle Neptune, who was let go after three seasons marked by a 54-47 overall record and no NCAA tournament appearances. Villanova’s basketball culture, often defined by a focus on excellence, seeks a return to its winning ways under Willard’s leadership.

The Wildcats will be challenged early this season, as their roster features only one returning scorer, junior guard Tyler Perkins. Willard will rely heavily on transfers and freshmen as he aims to implement a new style of play. The team has already faced adversity with injuries sidelining important players, including graduate point guard Devin Askew.

“It’s all new to Lewis,” Willard said about Acaden Lewis, a highly regarded freshman point guard. Willard’s coaching style is reminiscent of previous leaders in the sport, focusing on both discipline and engagement with players. Perkins stated, “I love his concepts, the way he handles himself every day in practice. It’s been amazing.”

With the season opener just days away, Willard remains focused on building team chemistry. He expressed hope that by mid-December, the team would find its rhythm. “If you look at college basketball in general, most new teams that start playing really good, that’s usually the time frame you’re looking for,” he explained.

As anticipation builds for the game against BYU, Willard understands the challenges ahead. He knows winning is key to solidify his place at Villanova, as athletic director Eric Roedl emphasized the importance of engagement both on and off the court for the head coach. With Willard’s commitment to community and success, fans are eager to see if he can restore Villanova’s legacy.
