Khabib Nurmagomedov Champions League Handshake Incident

MUNICH, Germany — UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov caused a stir on Saturday night during CBS Sports’ coverage of the 2025 Champions League final at Allianz Arena. He refused a handshake from host Kate Scott, citing his Islamic faith.

The incident occurred after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed over Inter Milan with a stunning 5-0 victory. Following the match, Nurmagomedov approached the CBS Sports panel, which included pundits Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, greeting them with handshakes.

However, when Scott extended her hand for a handshake, Nurmagomedov declined, leaving the moment somewhat awkward. He later clarified to Scott that his refusal stemmed from his religious beliefs, which prohibit him from physical contact with women who are not relatives.

Scott, previously known as Kate Abdo, quickly pulled back her hand and apologized on air, acknowledging the significance of the moment. Nurmagomedov, who is a devout Sunni Muslim, has consistently upheld his beliefs, which resonate with similar practices in Muslim cultures that emphasize modesty and respect.

“Khabib respectfully declining Kate’s handshake is a mark of respect in our religion,” one fan wrote on social media. Others praised both Nurmagomedov and Scott for handling the situation gracefully. “Beautiful! Very respectful from Khabib. I love to see this,” another user added.

Despite some commendations, not all responses were positive. Critics noted that he shook hands with his male counterparts but not with Scott. “That didn’t seem respectful. He ignored her until she reached out,” one commenter expressed.

Before his refusal, Nurmagomedov had just celebrated his beloved PSG’s victory alongside fellow UFC fighter Islam Makhachev. After discussing the match and PSG securing their first-ever Champions League title, Nurmagomedov quickly shifted the conversation back to football.

While the handshake incident initially sparked controversy, it ultimately served as a reminder of how cultural beliefs can intersect with public life. Scott continued her coverage with professionalism, and both she and Nurmagomedov exited the moment with mutual respect.
