Klay Thompson Hits 16,000 Career Points in Mavericks’ Loss to Nuggets
DALLAS, Texas — Klay Thompson scored 25 points on Sunday, reaching the 16,000-point milestone in his NBA career during the Dallas Mavericks‘ 119-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets at the American Airlines Center. The 12-year veteran became the 131st player in league history to achieve the feat.
Thompson, who was drafted in 2011, surpassed Amar’e Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, and Derek Harper on the all-time scoring list. He reached the milestone with a 3-pointer at the 7:53 mark in the second quarter. Despite the loss, Thompson reflected on the achievement, calling it a “special moment.”
“It’s cool, but it makes you realize how ridiculous it is that LeBron [James] has 40,000,” Thompson said after the game. “That’s insane. But it’s cool. Anytime you do something like that in the NBA, it’s a special moment.”
Thompson has averaged 20 points per game over his career, a testament to his consistency as a scorer. His former Golden State Warriors teammate Stephen Curry recently surpassed 24,000 points, while Russell Westbrook, who scored 21 points for Denver on Sunday, has over 25,000 career points.
The Mavericks started strong, building a 19-point lead in the first half behind Thompson’s hot shooting. He went 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range early in the game. However, Dallas struggled to maintain control, particularly in rebounding and during the fourth quarter, allowing Denver to secure the win.
Thompson’s milestone highlights his longevity and impact in the league. Despite the Mavericks’ recent struggles, his performance remains a bright spot for the team as they navigate injuries and roster challenges.
