Lady Gaga’s New Album Features Romantic Song Inspired by Engagement

LOS ANGELES, CA — Lady Gaga‘s highly anticipated album, “Mayhem,” set to release on March 7, showcases a deeply personal track, “Blade of Grass,” inspired by her engagement to fiancé Michael Polansky. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga revealed that the song originated from a moment shortly after Polansky proposed to her last spring.
“I wrote it after Michael proposed to me. The song was about a memory I had of us standing in the backyard, and he asked, ‘When I propose to you, what am I supposed to do?’” Gaga explained. “I said, ‘You can just wrap a blade of grass around my finger in the backyard. And I’ll say yes.’” This heartfelt exchange exemplifies the romantic undercurrents of the song.
Gaga, 38, described “Blade of Grass” as having an “eerie and tense” atmosphere compared to the hopeful closer, “Die With a Smile.” She noted that while “Die With a Smile” encapsulates a sense of optimism, “Blade of Grass” reflects both gratitude and a poignant sense of loss. “It was the memory of the past haunting me and the loss of friends, the loss of loved ones,” she said, referring to her late friend and managing director, Sonja Durham, who passed away from cancer in 2017.
“I was remembering that this happy moment was happening in a place where it was bittersweet,” she added, painting a picture of the complexity of emotions surrounding her engagement.
Polansky has played a significant role in Gaga’s creative journey, encouraging her to pursue new music. “On the Chromatica tour, I saw a fire in her,” Polansky commented in the interview. “I wanted to help her keep that alive and make music that made her happy.” He is also credited as a co-writer on one of the album’s tracks, “Disease.”
The couple, who were first linked in 2020, got engaged in April 2024. A source close to the couple revealed that they had been engaged for several months before going public. “Everyone’s excited about them getting married,” the source said, noting that Gaga is “the happiest” with Polansky, who is supportive of her career but prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
In her interview, Gaga shared how vital life experiences are in informing her songwriting. “As a songwriter, you need life to inspire your writing,” she stated. The singer emphasized the importance of living life fully so that she can create music that resonates deeply with her true self.
With the release of “Mayhem” just around the corner, fans are eagerly anticipating a blend of chaotic and heartfelt themes. Gaga described the album as a culmination of her experiences, demonstrating how even in tumultuous times, love and artistry can flourish.
“Mayhem will be available to stream on March 7,” the singer concluded, inviting her audience into her world of emotional exploration.
