Lake Effect Snow Blankets Watertown And Tug Hill Region, Warning In Effect

Residents in Watertown and the surrounding areas woke up to a winter wonderland as lake-effect snow expanded its reach, bringing heavy snowfall to the region. The snow band, originating from Lake Ontario, has resulted in a lake effect snow warning for Jefferson and Lewis counties, which will remain in effect until Thursday evening. Alongside, southeastern St. Lawrence County is also under a lake effect snow warning until early Thursday morning, while northwestern St. Lawrence County and parts of Franklin County have a winter weather advisory until the same time.

The affected areas within the snow band may experience whiteout conditions, poor visibility, and treacherous driving conditions. The Tug Hill region, specifically, is forecasted to receive significant snow accumulation of up to 3 feet or more by the end of the warning period. While places outside the lake effect zone may see only a few inches of snow or potentially none at all.

The lake effect snow is expected to hover over the Watertown area and areas south throughout Wednesday, before returning to the Tug Hill region in the late afternoon and evening. However, some relief is expected as the weekend approaches, with a small chance of snow on both Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will remain cold, with highs ranging from the upper teens to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Looking ahead, Sunday is anticipated to be partly sunny with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees. Monday will bring mostly cloudy skies, and Tuesday carries a 50% chance of mixed precipitation. Highs during both days will range from the low to mid-30s.
