Lake Effect Snowstorm Forecast to Hit Central New York
Syracuse, N.Y. — A significant lake effect snowstorm is expected to impact Central New York starting Monday evening, with forecasts indicating accumulations between 8 to 14 inches. The National Weather Service issued this warning as a winter storm watch begins at 7 p.m. Monday and continues through Wednesday morning.
The Syracuse area may see as much as 15 inches of snow by New Year’s Eve, along with wind gusts reaching 50 mph, which will exacerbate travel difficulties. Almost all of Central New York, including counties like Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and part of Cayuga, are under this winter storm warning.
As the storm progresses, snow may create near-zero visibility conditions. Winter travel conditions are expected to be especially treacherous on Tuesday morning and evening. A broader weather system is bringing additional freezing rain and rain to the region earlier in the day.
In response to the incoming weather, the National Weather Service has also issued a Flood Watch for Western New York that extends until 4 p.m. Monday due to anticipated flooding from heavy rainfall. Areas near rivers and streams, particularly in Buffalo, could face flooding risks as water levels rise rapidly.
Specifically, a Flood Warning for Cazenovia Creek in Erie County is in effect from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, as minor flooding is projected. At midday Sunday, the creek’s water level was recorded at 3.0 feet, well below the 10.0-foot flood stage, but it’s expected to rise above flood levels by Monday morning.
Additionally, a High Wind Warning is placed for several counties, including Niagara and Orleans, with expected gusts reaching 65 to 75 mph. This high wind threat is likely to occur primarily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday.
With the impending storm, travelers are advised to prepare for severe conditions, carry necessary emergency supplies, and consider avoiding travel if possible. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is also urging motorists to pay close attention to travel advisories during this hazardous weather period.
