Lakers Face Challenges as Preseason Begins: Key Players Injured

Los Angeles, California — The Los Angeles Lakers are entering the 2025-26 NBA season with significant roster challenges as they prepare for opening night against the Golden State Warriors. Key players LeBron James, Maxi Kleber, and rookie Adou Thiero will all miss the game due to injuries.
Maxi Kleber is sidelined for at least two weeks with an oblique strain. The 33-year-old forward was initially questionable for the season opener but will now miss further time for recovery. Thiero, the Lakers’ early second-round draft pick, is also affected by a persistent knee injury that has limited his participation during training camp.
LeBron James, the team’s veteran superstar, is out due to sciatica. This marks the first time in his career that he will miss the season opener as he embarks on his 23rd season in the league. The Lakers expect to evaluate his progress later this month. Despite being closer to the end of his career, James remains a vital player for Los Angeles when healthy.
In the offseason, the Lakers made substantial changes to their roster, including the acquisition of Deandre Ayton from the Portland Trail Blazers. Though Ayton will start as the center, former starter Jaxson Hayes had been in line to back him up but is currently dealing with a wrist injury sustained in the last game of the previous season.
Despite the injuries, the Lakers will rely on the talents of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves to generate offense against the Warriors. Coach JJ Redick has indicated that the team’s defense may also adjust without James on the floor.
As the Lakers navigate these challenges, internal evaluations are likely to focus on the impact of the injuries and the performance of newcomers and remaining players. With the regular season underway, the team’s adaptability will be tested.
