Les Grossman May Get His Own Movie, Director Confirms

LOS ANGELES, CA — Tom Cruise‘s fan-favorite character Les Grossman from the 2008 film “Tropic Thunder” might be getting a standalone movie. During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz‘s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that he and Cruise have had serious discussions about the project.
“The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so funny,” McQuarrie said. He mentioned that they are exploring how best to develop the character into a feature film. “It ultimately comes down to what that character is,” he added.
In “Tropic Thunder,” Grossman is depicted as an aggressive, big-handed movie producer, known for his harsh demeanor. He gained popularity for his memorable antics, including a humorous dance routine to Ludacris’s song “Get Back.”
McQuarrie also shared how brainstorming ideas for a Grossman movie provided relief during the demanding filming of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” He described their sessions as moments of “decompression,” where they could play with scenes and discuss concepts over meals.
If McQuarrie and Cruise’s current partnership is any indication, the Grossman film could likely be a success. “Final Reckoning” recently earned a record-breaking $63 million over its opening weekend, suggesting their collaboration continues to resonate with audiences.
While McQuarrie has not confirmed any concrete plans for the Les Grossman project, he expressed enthusiasm for the character’s potential in a leading role, saying, “We’re having very serious conversations about it.” Final details and a potential timeline for the movie remain uncertain.
