Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern Shine in Netflix’s ‘Lonely Planet’
Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern star in the newly released Netflix romance film, ‘Lonely Planet,’ directed and written by Susannah Grant, known for her work on ‘Erin Brockovich.’ The movie follows the story of Katherine, a reclusive novelist played by Laura Dern, who attends a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco to overcome her writer’s block. There, she meets Owen, a young man portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, and their initial acquaintanceship blossoms into a profound and life-altering love affair.
The film is set against the backdrop of Morocco, a location that significantly enhances the bond between the characters. Hemsworth and Dern praised the remote and exotic setting, noting that it added a layer of introspection and isolation that tightened their characters’ bond. “We shot in so many incredibly remote places that, at times, all we had was each other,” Hemsworth shared in an interview with Collider.
The chemistry between Hemsworth and Dern is a highlight of the film. Their characters’ vulnerabilities and the depth of their relationship are central to the narrative. Hemsworth’s character, Owen, is more than just a romantic interest; he is a complex individual navigating his identity and self-worth after a strained relationship with his writer girlfriend, played by Diana Silvers. “I always thought it was really interesting that when you meet this character, he’s at a crossroads in life. He’s trying to figure out what he really wants and who he really is,” Hemsworth explained.
The filming process was also marked by memorable moments, including a motorcycle ride scene where Hemsworth was particularly cautious to ensure Dern’s safety. Despite his experience with motorcycles, Hemsworth was nervous about riding with Dern as a passenger, especially given the old and heavy bike they used. Dern recalled Hemsworth’s protective nature during the scene, emphasizing his insistence on wearing helmets for safety.
‘Lonely Planet’ is now streaming on Netflix, offering a heartfelt exploration of romance that stands out in an era dominated by IP-driven franchises and action-packed blockbusters. The film’s focus on vulnerability, self-worth, and the transformative power of love makes it a compelling watch for audiences seeking a nuanced and emotional romantic drama.
