ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Lindsey Vonn, the iconic American skier, made a remarkable return to competitive skiing six years after her retirement. This comeback follows a partial knee replacement in 2024, leading many to marvel at her tenacity and determination.

Vonn’s journey, marked by stunning victories and challenging injuries, began at age three when she first clicked into skis at Buck Hill in Minnesota. With coaching from ski legend Erich Sailer, she began her ascent to becoming one of the greatest alpine skiers in history. Her father, Alan Kildow, a former ski racer, paved the way for Vonn’s early passion for the sport.

The skier’s career is full of triumphs, starting with her first significant accolades in 2007 when she earned silver medals in Åre, Sweden. However, a crash during practice left her with a sprained ACL, forcing her to miss the rest of the season. Undeterred, Vonn returned to capture the overall World Cup titles in both 2008 and 2009, setting records along the way.

During the 2011-2012 season, she achieved an unparalleled feat, winning 12 World Cup races and earning her fourth Crystal Globe. By 2015, Vonn had broken the record for the most World Cup wins, totaling 63 victories with her win in Cortina, Italy.

Despite facing multiple injuries, including fractures and torn ligaments, Vonn continued to perform at a high level. She sustained a knee injury in 2018, which marked the beginning of her decision to retire after the 2018-2019 season. Though she didn’t break the record of 86 World Cup wins, she secured her legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

After her retirement, Vonn struggled with constant pain but sought surgical solutions. In April 2024, she underwent a partial knee replacement, allowing her to live without pain and reigniting her passion for skiing.

As she returned to the slopes, Vonn faced skepticism and criticism regarding her decision to compete again. Nevertheless, she proved her doubters wrong by finishing 14th in the Super-G at St. Moritz in December 2024 and continued to show impressive results, finishing sixth and fourth in subsequent races in January 2025.

Vonn’s return to the World Cup in March 2025 culminated in a second-place finish at Sun Valley, marking her 138th World Cup podium. With the upcoming World Championships in Milano, she continues to inspire fans and fellow athletes, reminding everyone that obstacles can be overcome.

“This has become more than a return to the snow,” Vonn said. “It’s a symbol of pursuing your passions, regardless of age or setbacks.”
