The Lions achieved a significant victory on September 14, 2024, at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, advancing to their first Currie Cup final since 2019. The clash against the determined Cheetahs was as intense as it was thrilling, culminating in a 43-34 win for the Lions.

The match was marked by its unpredictable nature, with the lead changing hands multiple times. Despite the Cheetahs’ early dominance, the Lions capitalized on their experience in the United Rugby Championship to secure the win. Key performances from tighthead Asenathi Ntlabakanye and flank Ruan Venter contributed significantly to the Lions’ strong showing. JC Pretorius, stepping off the bench, provided additional energy, while scrumhalf Nico Steyn efficiently orchestrated the team’s play from behind a strong forward pack.

Sanele Nohamba and Morne Brandon, coming on as substitutes, scored late tries, tipping the scales in favor of the Lions as the daylight waned at Ellis Park. The Cheetahs, despite showing remarkable skill and resilience, particularly through players like Carl Wegner and Oupa Mohoje, were hindered by errant goal-kicking.

The visitors, fleet of foot and strategic in their ball possession, managed to keep the contest alive with a stout defense, particularly excelling at line-outs. Jeandre Rudolph stood out for his nuisance factor in disrupting the Lions’ play, although an injury forced his early exit at a pivotal moment in the first half.

The Cheetahs opened the scoring thanks to a favorable bounce for flyhalf Ethan Wentzel, who scored twice. However, errors and defensive lapses opened opportunities for the Lions. The home team leveled the score to 19-19 by halftime, with Lions’ No8 Jarod Cairns capitalizing on a blocked clearance from Wentzel.

The Lions’ scoring continued with tries by Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Ruan Venter, Marius Louw, Sanele Nohamba, and Morne Brandon, supplemented by Kade Wolhuter’s conversions. Despite their spirited efforts and early lead, the Cheetahs fell short, with Cohen Jasper, Victor Sekekete, Vernon Paulo, and Georghe Lourens each contributing to their total score.

This semi-final win puts the Lions in a strong position as they prepare for the Currie Cup final, continuing their pursuit of glory since their last appearance in the finals five years ago.
