Community Support Small Businesses Local

CHICAGO, Ill. — Local residents are coming together to bolster small businesses facing economic hardships, sparked by the recent inflation surge. This grassroots effort, dubbed ‘Shop Local Week,’ runs from November 1 to November 7 and features promotional events aimed at drawing customers to independently-owned stores.

The initiative was organized by the Chicago Chamber of Commerce, which reported that nearly 40% of small businesses in the area are struggling to stay afloat due to rising costs and dwindling sales. Chamber President Maria Gonzalez emphasized the importance of supporting these local enterprises. ‘Small businesses are the backbone of our community,’ she said. ‘They provide jobs, foster neighborhood pride, and contribute to our local identity.’

During the week-long event, participating shops will offer discounts, host workshops, and hold community gatherings to encourage engagement. Among them is Al's Deli, where owner Al Rodriguez aims to attract old and new customers with a special homemade sandwich deal. ‘I hope everyone comes out and sees what we have to offer,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Every purchase makes a difference, not just for me but for all of us who rely on these businesses.’

Residents like Emily Yang are excited about the opportunity to contribute. ‘I’ve always loved shopping at local stores, and I’m glad there’s a specific week to celebrate them,’ Yang said. ‘It’s a small way for me to help my neighbors and keep my community vibrant.’

The economic impact of COVID-19 has left many small businesses fighting for survival, with statistics revealing that one in three such establishments has faced closures since the pandemic began. The Chicago Chamber of Commerce is working to provide resources and support to help businesses navigate these challenges.

As the event approaches, local officials and community leaders are encouraging residents to plan their shopping, share social media posts about their favorite businesses, and participate in the week’s activities. ‘Every dollar spent at a local business has a ripple effect,’ said Gonzalez. ‘It supports our economy, helps create more jobs, and enhances our overall community well-being.’

As Shop Local Week unfolds, organizers hope the initiative will not only boost sales for listed businesses but also instill a lasting appreciation for supporting the local economy.
