Lorde Drops Bold New Single ‘Man of the Year’ Ahead of Album Release

Los Angeles, CA — Lorde has released her new single, “Man of the Year,” from her forthcoming album, “Virgin,” set to debut on June 27. Accompanied by a striking music video, the track is described by Lorde as one of her proudest creations.
As part of her ongoing evolution as an artist, Lorde collaborated with producer Jim-E Stack on the single, which addresses her fluidity in gender identity. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed that writing the song coincided with her decision to stop taking birth control, leading to a significant personal transformation.
The music video features Lorde in various intimate moments, including scenes where she reflects on her identity while alone in a white tee and jeans. She sings, “Now I’m broken open / Let’s hear it for the man of the year,” showcasing her introspective lyrics.
“Man of the Year” is the second single from “Virgin,” following the release of “What Was That” in April. Lorde has embraced her complex identity, indicating that while she identifies as a cisgender woman, her understanding of gender expansiveness has increased.
“It’s not necessarily a linear experience for me,” she said. “I know that’s not a satisfying answer, but there’s something resistant about putting it in a box.” In her Rolling Stone interview, she described how an interaction with fellow musician Chappell Roan prompted her to rethink her identity.
In preparation for her album release, Lorde plans to embark on a North American tour, featuring opening acts including Blood Orange and the Japanese House. Fans eagerly await more details as the album’s launch date approaches.
