‘A Lot of Responsibility’: Cooper Flagg Settles In After Mavericks’ Point Guard Trial
DALLAS, Texas — Cooper Flagg, an 18-year-old rookie for the Dallas Mavericks, has been adapting to a demanding role in the NBA despite the team’s rocky start this season. Initially thrust into the position of starting point guard, Flagg has faced both the pressures of a lead facilitator and the defensive scrutiny from top players in the league.
Flagg began his career as the Mavericks’ starting point guard for the first seven games, averaging 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Despite his struggles, including shooting only 30.8% from three-point range, he was asked by head coach Jason Kidd to take on the responsibility early on. “I want to make him uncomfortable,” Kidd said during Flagg’s introductory press conference.
However, faced with immense defensive pressure from players like Lu Dort of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the decision to move Flagg back to a wing position appears to be paying off. After transitioning to small forward, he has produced averages of 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 48.3% from the field.
Flagg candidly reflected on his early experiences playing point guard, acknowledging the steep learning curve. “It’s a lot of pressure and a lot of responsibility that comes with being a point guard,” Flagg said. “I don’t know if I was ready to handle that right off the bat.” He added that having another ballhandler alongside him has alleviated some of the pressure during games.
Jason Kidd noted that playing the point guard position is vital for Flagg’s long-term development. He explained that stretching Flagg’s capabilities would ideally prepare him for more significant roles in the future. “He’s getting the top defender,” Kidd mentioned, reflecting on how better spacing could benefit Flagg in a more balanced lineup.
Despite changes in the lineup, including the addition of D'Angelo Russell as point guard, Flagg’s scoring and on-court confidence have risen. His ability to read the game has impressed both teammates and coaches alike. “Just figuring out spacing, attacking those guys, trying to make a play,” he explained. His understanding of game dynamics has matured, which has been crucial for the Mavericks.
Although Flagg’s transition has been marked by challenges, it has also provided him with essential NBA lessons. On Friday night, in a double-overtime loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, he logged a season-high 47 minutes, scoring 16 points and demonstrating his grit and determination. “It’s a long game, a lot of plays, a lot of minutes,” Flagg said post-game, reflecting the maturity he’s shown throughout the season.
With the Mavericks holding a disappointing 3-10 start to the season, Flagg’s adaptation remains a bright spot in an otherwise tough stretch. His recent performances have shown that he is steadily overcoming the challenges imposed by his rookie season. Kidd has expressed confidence in Flagg’s growth, indicating that, despite the uphill battle, the young player is beginning to find his footing and contribute effectively to the team.
