LSU Defeats South Carolina in a Historic Comeback
In a thrilling encounter at the Williams-Brice Stadium, the No. 16 ranked Tigers emerged victorious against South Carolina with a dramatic 36-33 comeback win. Falling behind 17-0 early in the second quarter, LSU rallied to secure the victory, marking it as the second-largest comeback in their history for an away game.
The Tigers clawed back from a significant deficit with a critical interception by Zy Alexander in the first quarter and a robust defense against the South Carolina offense. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier guided LSU’s attack, completing critical passes and exploiting opportunities, while Caden Durham provided a spark with a crucial 26-yard rushing touchdown to chip into South Carolina’s lead.
South Carolina capitalized on early opportunities with a quick scoring drive led by quarterback Sellers and a strong running performance from Rocket Sanders. Despite increasing their lead with a 4-yard quarterback sneak by Sellers and a field goal from Alex Herrera, LSU’s defense halted their momentum with significant stops and turnovers.
Key plays included a game-changing 80-yard drive concluded with Nussmeier’s touchdown pass to Mason Taylor, putting LSU ahead for the first time in the game during the final quarter. South Carolina responded with a 66-yard run by Sanders to briefly regain the lead, but LSU demonstrated resilience with a decisive touchdown by Williams, ensuring their victory.
Post-game, LSU’s coach Brian Kelly commended his team’s perseverance and highlighted the performance of freshman Caden Durham, noting his ability to tackle and gain crucial yards against a challenging South Carolina defense. This victory left LSU well-prepared for their upcoming match against UCLA at the Tiger Stadium.
