LOS ANGELES, CA — Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is in talks to direct a new film titled ‘Artificial,’ which will explore the tumultuous events surrounding OpenAI in 2023. The project comes after Guadagnino’s previous DC film, ‘Sgt. Rock,’ was shelved.

The film recounts the brief but intense period when OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, was ousted by the board amid rising safety concerns about artificial intelligence and allegations of misconduct. Just five days later, he was reinstated due to a significant backlash from employees.

Producers David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, alongside Simon Rich, who wrote the script, are behind ‘Artificial.’ Jennifer Fox is also expected to join the production team. The film is being developed rapidly at Amazon MGM Studios, with sources indicating production could start this summer in locations such as San Francisco and Italy.

No official casting decisions have been made, but actors Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Yura Borisov are reportedly being considered for key roles. If finalized, Garfield would portray Altman, while Barbaro is slated for the role of chief technology officer Mira Murati, and Borisov would depict Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder who pushed for Altman’s removal.

This film marks Guadagnino’s third collaboration with Amazon MGM following previous projects, including the upcoming release ‘After the Hunt,’ starring Garfield, Julia Roberts, and Ayo Edebiri. Guadagnino also directed ‘Challengers,’ which was released last year.

‘Artificial’ is set to shine a light not only on Altman’s story but also on the complexities and controversies surrounding AI in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
