Mac Jones Sparks Trade Rumors as 49ers Backup Quarterback
San Francisco, CA – Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is making waves this season as a backup for the San Francisco 49ers, stepping up with Brock Purdy sidelined due to a toe injury.
Jones has been an active player this season, appearing in nine games and starting in eight of them. He has thrown for a total of 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $8.4 million contract during the offseason, and with one year left, trade discussions are already emerging.
In a recent article for USA Today, sports writer Jacob Camenker suggested that the Miami Dolphins might be interested in trading for Jones. Camenker noted, “The Dolphins can’t move off Tua Tagovailoa’s contract without eating a dead-cap hit of nearly $100 million next offseason, per Spotrac.com.” This scenario places Miami in a difficult position concerning their quarterback situation.
“Barring a trade, Miami will likely be stuck with the inconsistent lefty at least through the 2026 season, but the Dolphins will still almost certainly bring in competition for him,” Camenker added.
Jones, who played in the AFC East for three seasons with New England, is familiar with the competitive atmosphere of teams like the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. His experience may make him an attractive option for teams looking to bolster their quarterback roster.
The upcoming offseason could see Jones garner significant attention, as several teams are actively seeking upgrades at the quarterback position. With a solid performance this year, he has positioned himself as a favorable candidate for potential trades.
