Macy's announced Friday that its Greece Ridge Mall location in Greece, New York, will close as part of a broader strategy to shutter 66 underperforming stores nationwide. The decision is part of the retailer’s efforts to streamline operations and focus on more profitable locations.

The Greece Ridge Mall store, a long-standing anchor tenant, is set to close in early 2025. Macy’s Chairman Jeff Gennette stated that the closures are necessary to reallocate resources and prioritize investments in high-performing stores and digital growth. “This decision allows us to focus on stores that are thriving and better serve our customers in a rapidly changing retail environment,” Gennette said.

The Greece Ridge Mall location has been a fixture in the community for decades, but like many traditional department stores, it has struggled with declining foot traffic and shifting consumer preferences. The mall’s management expressed disappointment but acknowledged the challenges facing brick-and-mortar retailers. “We are saddened by Macy’s departure but remain committed to providing a vibrant shopping experience for our visitors,” said a spokesperson for the mall.

Nationwide, Macy’s closures will affect thousands of employees. The company has stated that it will offer severance packages and job placement assistance to affected workers. In Greece, approximately 75 employees will be impacted by the closure.

The announcement comes amid a broader trend of retail consolidation, as traditional department stores face increasing competition from online retailers and changing consumer habits. Macy’s has been investing heavily in its digital platforms and smaller-format stores, which have shown stronger growth compared to its larger, traditional locations.
