CHICAGO, Feb. 21, 2025 — Magic: The Gathering is set to release a crossover card set based on Nickelodeon’s acclaimed animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Announced during MagicCon in Chicago, the new set is scheduled for launch on Nov. 21, 2025.

The latest addition to the Universes Beyond series, which incorporates popular franchises into Magic: The Gathering gameplay, will allow players to explore the adventures of beloved characters such as Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph. According to Wizards of the Coast, the set will be Standard legal, meaning it can be played in official Magic formats alongside traditional MTG cards.

“Magic: The Gathering Avatar: The Last Airbender invites players to join their favorite characters for new adventures, iconic art, and an elemental showdown like never before,” Wizards of the Coast announced.

Previously, the Universes Beyond sets have successfully integrated franchises such as Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40K. The anticipation surrounding this new release stems from not only the original charm of Avatar: The Last Airbender but also the success of past crossovers.

Nicole Carpenter, a published games journalist, noted, “Fans of Avatar have long awaited this moment, particularly with the series’ enduring legacy and appeal across generations.” Carpenter has been a deputy editor at Polygon’s games section since 2020 and has previously worked at outlets like Kotaku and The Mary Sue. She believes the crossover could attract both die-hard fans of Avatar and new players to the card game.

The announcement comes on the heels of Wizards of the Coast revealing additional cards and artwork for forthcoming sets, including Tarkir: Dragonstorm, set for release on April 11, 2025. The excitement continues with Edge of Eternities, a science-fantasy set, launching on August 1, 2025.

Mages can expect a mix of familiar mechanics and potentially new features tailored to the Avatar theme. While specifics about card types remain under wraps, speculation suggests that elements from the show—fire, water, earth, and air—could play a significant role in gameplay.

“I anticipate a rich variety of cards that reflect character development and story arcs, especially around Zuko’s transition from antagonist to hero,” Carpenter adds.

Magic: The Gathering’s dedicated community has expressed excitement about the prospect of integrating a universally beloved show, particularly given Avatar’s significant place in pop culture since its original airing in 2005. The synergy between the magic universe and the elemental bending of Avatar appears promising.

In a related note, a new Avatar series titled “Avatar: Seven Havens” is also set to premiere in January 2026, further boosting interest in the franchise and its associated products.
