SEATTLE, Wash. — Wizards of the Coast has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Square Enix, revealing that the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering will feature characters from Final Fantasy in four new Commander decks launching on June 13, 2025.
Each of the decks will represent a different mainline Final Fantasy title, allowing fans to combine the rich storytelling and character depth of the beloved series with the strategic gameplay of Magic. The four featured games are Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV, with Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola leading their respective decks.
The upcoming set, which will also be fully draftable and Standard-legal, includes preconstructed decks made up of 100 cards featuring a mix of new cards and reprints, all reimagined with a Final Fantasy theme. Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt emphasized the excitement among developers, noting, “Final Fantasy games are so rich with flavor, beloved characters, and unique settings that choosing a single game as the theme provided more than enough material to design a full deck of cards around.”
Holt explained that the selection of games was based on appropriately balancing gameplay and familiarity, with Final Fantasy VII and XIV being clear favorites, while VI and X were chosen following team discussions due to their popularity among staff members. “This was one of those products where everyone in the building was invested in each stage of development, as we have so many passionate Final Fantasy fans in the building,” he said.
The decks will feature unique lore and gameplay mechanics inspired by the games. For example, Terra’s deck, named “Revival Trance,” focuses on graveyard strategies, allowing players to revive fallen heroes from their graveyards. Meanwhile, Cloud leads the “Limit Break” deck, emphasizing equipment strategies aligned with Final Fantasy VII’s iconic battle mechanics.
As for Tidus’s deck, “Counter Blitz,” its gameplay will revolve around passing counters around, inspired by the Sphere Grid leveling system from Final Fantasy X. Y’shtola’s “Scions & Spellcraft” deck will explore spellcasting mechanics, enhancing the gameplay for fans of Final Fantasy XIV.
“Our core approach to Final Fantasy VII was to capture the original PS1 game’s narrative while utilizing modern aesthetics to enhance character designs and memorable locations,” said Dillon Deveney, Principal Narrative Game Designer. “We aimed to provide a nostalgic experience for players of both the original and modern adaptations of the game.”
The cards will showcase a mix of beloved characters throughout the decks, with players able to deploy iconic figures such as Aerith, Tifa, and Yuna. “While I can’t talk specifics on who is included in each deck or their abilities just yet, fans can expect to see some of their favorite characters in the 99 of each deck as new legendary creatures,” Holt mentioned.
The decks will be available in both a Standard Edition priced at $69.99 and a Collector’s Edition for $149.99, which will feature cards with a special Surge foil treatment.
The excitement over the collaboration highlights the ongoing mingling of various pop cultures within the gaming community, as fans eagerly anticipate a chance to combine the intricate worlds of Final Fantasy with Magic: The Gathering’s strategic gameplay.
The upcoming release continues an ongoing trend of crossovers within the gaming world, paving the way for future collaborations that allow fans of different franchises to unite.
