Mlb Free Agency 2025

BOSTON, Mass. — Major League Baseball is witnessing a significant wave of free agency as multiple high-profile players opted out of their contracts, marking a potentially busy offseason. Among the notable players is Alex Bregman, who exercised his opt-out from the Boston Red Sox after completing just one year of his three-year, $120 million deal.

Bregman, 31, had a solid start to the 2025 season, finishing with a .273 batting average, 18 home runs, and 62 RBIs. Despite suffering a quad injury that kept him out for several weeks, his strong performance in the early months contributed to his decision to re-enter the free agency market.

More than 140 players have opted for free agency following the conclusion of the World Series, with additional names likely to emerge by the end of the week. Cody Bellinger also declined a $25 million option, coming off a standout season that saw him lead the league in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) despite mixed results on the road.

Another significant name, Edwin Díaz, rejected a two-year, $37 million option after an impressive campaign with the Mets, where he secured 28 saves with a 1.68 ERA. His teammate Pete Alonso, who had a solid season with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, also declined a $24 million player option, making waves as a prominent free agent.

The upcoming contract opt-outs and orientations have further sparked interest across the league, with the deadline set for Thursday. Players like Bregman and Bellinger are expected to attract considerable attention due to their recent performances.

The landscape of available players is particularly deep this offseason, with strong hitters and promising pitchers poised for profitable contracts. Teams like the New York Mets, who are looking for reinforcements, are already eyeing these free agents to enhance their rosters for the 2026 season.
