FX‘s new horror drama series, “Grotesquerie,” has left audiences stunned with a dramatic plot twist in its seventh episode. Viewers discovered that what they perceived as a straightforward murder investigation was actually unfolding within the mind of the protagonist, Detective Lois Tryon, portrayed by Niecy Nash-Betts. The revelation that Tryon has been in a coma, and not her husband as previously believed, flips the entire narrative.

This twist was part of a strategic plan by the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy. “The very fact that none of this got out is a miracle in today’s modern age,” Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter in a conversation with John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Content & FX Productions. The duo expressed delight at the audience’s surprise, describing the series as “show business” at its best.

Murphy, known for his work on anthologies like “American Horror Story” and “Feud,” brings his signature style of drama and suspense to “Grotesquerie.” The plot twist introduces dual roles for the cast, which includes Micaela Diamond, Raven Goodwin, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Travis Kelce, as their characters are revealed to be different in this new narrative reality.

Landgraf noted that this storytelling approach is part of a larger arc meant to engage audiences over multiple seasons. “You’re supposed to find it in real time,” he commented, highlighting the intention to keep viewers guessing.

The release strategy for “Grotesquerie” has been unconventional, with episodes released in pairs, leading up to a solo airing of the finale on Halloween Eve. This strategy was designed to maintain suspense and keep the series fresh, according to Murphy. The creator emphasized his goal of crafting a series that resonates with today’s existential uncertainty, noting, “It just was about something. It was really about where we’re living now.”

Nash-Betts, who was aware of the twist from the start, shared with PEOPLE magazine her excitement over the complex storyline. She described the reveal as “a very major plot twist,” adding that it contributed to her decision to join the project. The series invites viewers to question reality, as none of the characters are who they initially seemed to be.

As “Grotesquerie” heads into its final episodes, Murphy promises that further surprises await. With high-profile actors and innovative storytelling, the series has successfully captivated its audience, promising a blend of horror, drama, and unexpected twists.

“Grotesquerie” airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX and is available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
