Mali Dominates New Zealand in FIFA U-17 World Cup Opening Match
DOHA, Qatar — Mali defeated New Zealand 3-0 in their opening Group L match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Thursday. The Northern African team, which placed third in the previous tournament in 2023, showcased their strength early in the game.
Mali’s Seydou Dembele opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing off a rapid counterattack. Nicknamed “the little Messi,” Dembele skillfully weaved through defenders, placing a left-footed strike past New Zealand goalkeeper Toby Borgnis.
Mali dominated the first half, controlling possession and recording 14 shots compared to New Zealand’s four. Mahamadou Traore forced a brilliant save from Borgnis ten minutes before halftime, keeping New Zealand within a goal.
The second half saw Mali extend their lead. In the 55th minute, Zoumana Ballo received a precise pass from Dembele, splitting the New Zealand defense before scoring comfortably.
In a bid to mount a comeback, New Zealand coach Martin Bullock brought on strikers Ben Perez Baldoni and Justin Cardozo, but they struggled to penetrate Mali’s organized defense. Aaron Cartwright had a free kick go over the bar in the 79th minute.
Just a minute later, Mali solidified their victory when Raymond Bomba sprinted behind New Zealand captain Alex Lienard and rifled a shot into the net, making it 3-0. New Zealand’s best chance came late in the match, when Cartwright’s cross for Cardozo sailed over the bar.
Mali concluded the match with 31 shots on goal compared to eight from New Zealand. In the other Group L matchup, Austria defeated Saudi Arabia 1-0.
New Zealand will face Saudi Arabia next on Sunday morning, looking to recover from their opening loss. The tournament’s format allows the top two teams from each group, along with eight best third-placed teams, to advance to the Round of 32.
