Marcello Hernández: The Rising Star of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and Gen Z’s New Favorite
Marcello Hernández, the 27-year-old comedian from Miami, has been making waves as one of the newest and most popular faces on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). Hired in 2022 as a recurring cast member, Hernández has been promoted to a series regular for the show’s landmark 50th anniversary season, making him one of the youngest cast members in recent history.
Hernández stands out not only for his youthful energy but also for his unique background. He is the fourth Latino in SNL’s cast history and the first Cuban-Dominican, bringing a hyper-specific perspective to his sketches. His Miami origins and cultural heritage are prominently featured in his comedy, reflecting his experiences growing up in a city he describes as “kind of its own country”.
Despite his short stature, Hernández has embraced the label of a “short king,” using it to his advantage and connecting with his Gen Z audience. In his sketches, he often celebrates his height, referencing other notable short figures like Kevin Hart, Bruno Mars, and Prince. This self-awareness and celebratory attitude have made him a favorite among younger viewers.
Hernández’s comedy is deeply rooted in his experiences, from his Miami upbringing to his time in college in Ohio. He has brought these diverse perspectives to sketches such as “Night Club Line,” where he plays a Miami club owner, and another sketch where he introduces his white girlfriend to his protective Latina mom, played by Pedro Pascal.
Aside from his work on SNL, Hernández is also set to perform live at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego on November 23, 2024, showcasing his stand-up comedy skills to a broader audience[1][3].
