Marco Sturm Boston Bruins Head Coach Debut

BOSTON — Marco Sturm is set to make his NHL coaching debut this Wednesday as the head coach of the Boston Bruins against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Sturm, who played 14 seasons in the NHL, was named the 30th head coach in Bruins history on June 5. His hiring marks the end of a unique journey from player to coach, having spent years coaching youth hockey and leading the German national team.

Reflecting on his path, Sturm shared that coaching was not on his radar during his playing days. “I don’t think so,” said Sturm, recalling the surprise of some former teammates. “But somewhere along the line, it clicked.”

After his playing career ended in 2013, Sturm transitioned to coaching for his son’s youth team. The experience reaffirmed his love for the game and he later took on roles at the prep school level, which eventually led him to the German national team.

“I didn’t hesitate when they offered me the head coach job,” Sturm said. “I knew I could be good at it.” His confidence has grown since taking on various coaching roles, including seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings and head coach of the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Sturm’s coaching style emphasizes both hard work and fun, a balance he believes is crucial for player development. “I want to get my players better. I want to win,” he stated on his first day of training camp.

General manager Don Sweeney noted the difference Sturm has made during training camp, saying players have responded positively to his leadership. “He’s going to hold himself to the standard he expects from each and every one of us,” Sweeney remarked.

As Sturm prepares for his debut, he acknowledges the challenges ahead with the Bruins, a team in transition after the departure of veteran players. His focus will be on fostering growth within the team while aiming for success.

“I’m confident enough that I’m going to do the best that I can,” Sturm said, adding that he remains dedicated to learning and improving as a coach. Those close to Sturm believe he is ready for this next chapter in his career.
