Marcus Smart Los Angeles Lakers Defense

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Lakers have bolstered their perimeter defense by signing guard Marcus Smart, a former Defensive Player of the Year, after he was bought out by the Washington Wizards. This move comes as the Lakers aim to solidify their defensive strategy heading into the upcoming NBA season.

Smart, who has faced injuries over the past two seasons, remains a key asset for the team’s defensive lineup. His intensity on the court is expected to set the tone for the Lakers, who are also looking for internal improvement, particularly from forward Jarred Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt has shown impressive defensive skills during the preseason, and Smart expressed eagerness to share the court with him. “Just our versatility,” Smart said. “We’re able to guard multiple positions. Having Vando on the court, especially, when you get tired, you might be getting cooked by a guy tonight and he’s just got the hot hand. We have the luxury to say Marcus, Vando, switch off. That’s the big key part for us.”

Smart highlighted how their combined abilities could significantly impact the game. “If you add Gabe in there as well, us three are definitely gonna set the tone,” he added. However, some concerns have arisen regarding spacing on offense when Smart and Vanderbilt are both on the floor.

Despite dealing with minor injuries, Smart feels prepared for the season. “I feel great. That first game is always a little tough,” he said. “You’re just trying to get your feet under you and figure things out. I got that game out the way, felt really good. Today was a little bit more aggressive, so each day constantly just ramping it up.”

The Lakers are looking to start the season strong in just three days, with Smart and Vanderbilt potentially playing important defensive roles.
