Us Stock Market Good Friday Closure

NEW YORK, NY — U.S. stock markets will close on Friday, April 18, in observance of Good Friday, with both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq set to suspend trading for the day. Trading will resume on Monday, April 21, following the Easter holiday weekend.

The bond market will also observe the holiday, suspending trading early on Thursday, April 17, at 2 p.m. ET and remaining closed on Friday, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).

This year, Good Friday marks a significant religious observance for Christians, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Many businesses and public services alter their schedules to recognize the holiday, with varying impacts across different industries.

While certain banks such as Wells Fargo, PNC, and JPMorgan Chase will remain open on Good Friday, many will close their doors on Easter Sunday, April 20. It is advisable for customers to check their bank’s website for specific hours as some branches may operate under adjusted schedules.

Additionally, postal services will be suspended on Easter Sunday, resulting in no mail delivery or retail transactions, while UPS and FedEx will also restrict service availability, apart from specific critical operations.

The next major market closure is scheduled for Memorial Day on May 26, which will kick off the summer trading holidays for investors.

For those receiving postal services, UPS will not provide regular pickup and delivery services on Easter, although some locations may remain open for limited hours. In contrast, FedEx will operate under modified schedules, providing only essential services during the holiday.

The stock market closures are a part of the customary observance for this religious holiday in the U.S., where Christmas Day remains the only federally recognized religious holiday.
