LONDON, UK – Marlon Brando, a legendary actor known for his captivating performances, shocked fans with unexpected roles later in his career. After rising to fame in the 1950s with films like A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, he faced a decline during the 1960s with movies such as The Ugly American and Candy. However, the release of The Godfather in 1972 marked a turning point, revitalizing his career.

Brando’s performance as Vito Corleone earned him critical acclaim, but he continued to explore unconventional roles. He starred in an erotic French drama before teaming up with Jack Nicholson in the western The Missouri Breaks. His most surprising choice came when he accepted the role of Jor-El in the 1978 blockbuster Superman.

Despite being a major star, Brando was reportedly challenging to work with on the Superman set. He struggled to memorize his lines, leading some to be scribbled on the nappy of the infant he held during a scene. Moreover, Brando suggested a bizarre idea for his character’s appearance. He playfully proposed that on Krypton, where Jor-El is from, everyone could look like bagels, while he would make his son resemble a human to prepare him for life on Earth.

Christopher Reeve ultimately played Superman, but other actors were considered for the role, including James Caan. Caan, who starred alongside Brando in The Godfather, later recalled Brando’s eagerness to have him join the superhero film. During an interview with Howard Stern, Caan described Brando’s call as desperate. “You’ve got to do this picture with me,” Brando told him, adding, “I need some laughs.”

Despite Brando’s insistence, Caan declined the offer for various reasons, including his hesitation to wear the Superman costume and the commitment to a potential two-movie deal. Caan humorously recounted how Brando remained undeterred, saying, “So what? I’m doing it.” However, it was clear to Caan that if he accepted, he would have to work harder than Brando, ultimately leading to his decision to pass.

This unexpected glimpse into Brando’s thoughts and actions highlights his unique approach to acting and the creative discussions that took place during the making of Superman.
