Marsai Martin On The Masked Singer

Marsai Martin, the acclaimed actress and producer, recently discussed her captivating experience on “The Masked Singer” with Entertainment Weekly. Martin, who starred as the Woodpecker on the show’s 12th season, expressed great satisfaction with her time on the popular program, stating, “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

During the episode titled “Soundtrack of My Life Night,” Martin, who was the first to be unmasked, revealed her identity to the audience, a moment that none of the panelists managed to predict. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about her journey, Martin shared insights into her personal connection to the show, highlighting her grandmother’s avid viewership.

“She didn’t know anything about it until a week before I had to start filming,” Martin said, adding that her grandmother, who lives with her family, had to be informed due to Martin’s busy schedule. Although she couldn’t watch the episodes live with her grandmother, Martin conveyed her excitement and support received through text messages after her performances aired.

Another touching aspect of her time on “The Masked Singer” was her reunion with former “Black-ish” co-star Jenifer Lewis, who served as Martin’s Masked Ambassador. “After she was finished recording her hints, they actually allowed her to come in my trailer,” Martin said of Lewis’ emotional reaction upon discovering Martin’s involvement in the show.

Regarding her potential future in the music industry, Martin remained ambivalent, humorously stating, “If I do, it’s probably going to be just out of the ordinary, just like, bloop, here’s something!” She emphasized that while she may not be pursuing a full-time singing career, “The Masked Singer” provided a unique platform to explore her interests in music without the pressure of public scrutiny.

Reflecting on the competition, Martin admitted to underestimating the show’s rigor, thinking initially that performing behind a mask might be less demanding. “When you get there, it’s like, no, this is a competition,” she recounted, detailing the extensive rehearsals and preparations involved.

Despite the challenges, Martin expressed heartfelt appreciation for the supportive environment provided by “The Masked Singer” team, noting the “amazing” crew and warm producers. According to Martin, the entire experience was intense yet incredibly rewarding.

The 12th season of “The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, offering audiences new surprises and performances each week.
