Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Tops North American Box Office Again

Los Angeles, CA – Marvel‘s blockbuster film “Thunderbolts” and Ryan Coogler‘s “Sinners” continued to dominate the North American box office over the weekend. In its second week, “Thunderbolts” earned $33.1 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The film’s earnings represent a 55% drop from its opening weekend.
Internationally, “Thunderbolts” added $34 million, bringing its global total to $272.2 million. This release has quickly become the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, both domestically and globally. It has also outperformed the previous Marvel installment, “Captain America: Brave New World,” which faced a steeper 68% decline in its second weekend. Analysts attribute this success to positive reviews and strong word of mouth.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, commented on the film’s staying power, stating, “The holding power of this film harkens back to the heyday of Marvel. The currency of long-term playability is more important than sheer opening weekends.” The Walt Disney Company has another anticipated release set for later this summer with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
Meanwhile, “Sinners” crossed the $200 million mark in North American sales this weekend, adding $21.1 million domestically and $6.6 million internationally. The film’s total earnings reached $283.3 million globally. It is set to return to IMAX screens next weekend due to popular demand.
Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” held strong with earnings of $8 million, coming in third place this weekend, followed closely by “The Accountant 2” with $6.1 million. Despite several new releases trying to make a mark, none were able to break into the top rankings. The horror film “Clown in a Cornfield” performed best among the new entries, earning $3.7 million.
As the box office continues to grow, the year-to-date earnings have increased approximately 16% compared to last year. However, the market is still down over 32% when compared to 2019. Looking ahead, next weekend will see the release of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” along with two major films hitting theaters: “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”
