NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Off-Broadway hit “Oh, Mary!” has made a triumphant leap to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre after captivating audiences since its February 2024 premiere in the West Village. The satirical play, centered on the fictionalized life of Mary Todd Lincoln, combines humor and history, showcasing writer and star Cole Escola‘s unique storytelling.

In a turn of events this January, Escola reprised the lead role of Mary Todd Lincoln one final time before handing over the reins to Emmy-nominated actress Betty Gilpin, known for her roles in shows like “Three Women.” Starting March 18, Tituss Burgess will assume the role in a limited engagement. Under the direction of Tony Award-nominated Sam Pinkleton, both Gilpin and Pinkleton have embraced the challenge of portraying an iconic character that Escola has firmly defined.

“It was a significant moment during rehearsals when Cole and I realized that while his performance is unique, the role itself has the flexibility to be portrayed by many talented actors,” Pinkleton said. He noted that the play’s strong and clever writing allows it to be adaptable.

Gilpin, initially surprised by the opportunity, reflected on her reaction when she learned of her casting. “When my agent mentioned the prospect of playing Mary, I was overwhelmed with joy, feeling like it was the only role I could truly embody,” she said. Gilpin’s enthusiasm for the part is palpable, as she balances both excitement and trepidation about stepping into a role closely identified with Escola.

Pinkleton described Gilpin’s interpretation of Mary Todd Lincoln as “fearless” and noted the distinct contrast to Escola’s performance while remaining anchored in the play’s core values. “If Betty can immerse herself in this character like Cole did, it will be a transformative experience,” he emphasized.

Gilpin’s preparation involved engaging deeply with the character, describing it as an honor. “Each day, as I step onto the stage, I channel that overwhelming need to portray someone so complex and human,” she expressed. “Within seconds, the character takes hold of me, and it’s exhilarating.”

Pinkleton commended Gilpin’s unrestrained approach, noting that she brings raw emotion and a unique energy to the role. “From the very beginning, you can sense her commitment, making it a thrilling experience for everyone involved,” he remarked.

The dynamic atmosphere during rehearsals energized the entire cast, as Gilpin and her fellow performers, including Chris Renfro and Phillip James Brannon, connected over their shared dedication to the project. Gilpin reflected on the camaraderie that developed, stating, “In those moments, even amid the fear and excitement, I found joy with talented cast members sharing this dream.”
